With additional winter storms sure to be on the way, many people have questions about how fallen trees are handled by insurance. Unless the owner of the tree was previously notified that there was a hazard and should be taken down, damage done by the tree and clean up of the tree is the responsibility of the property owner the tree lands on. For example, if your neighbor's tree falls on your property, it is your insurance policy that pays for it, not your neighbors.
With this in mind, standard homeowners policies only cover the removal of the tree; if the tree breaks an insured object (deck/garage/house) the coverage is minimal. Make sure your policy has a tree removal endorsement, or the next storm could cost you thousands.

Tip 3
This tip is taken from Liz Pulliam Weston
You should always be honest with your insurer, not telling your insurer you own a dog is a big risk, If the dog hurts someone, you may not be covered. If your breed of dog is blacklisted by your company we can help you find a company that will cover you. Some dog bites cost their owners millions. Don't risk everything, check to make sure you are covered.

Insurance tip 2
Accidents happen even to the best and most experienced of contractors and landscapers. It is important to always see a certificate of insurance before allowing anyone to do work on your property. A general liability policy is a great way for landscapers and contractors big or small to protect themselves and their customers. On top of it being the responsible thing to do, being able to show a certificate of insurance makes your company or LLC more marketable.
